Southwark, 2018

These extensions to an ordinary end of terrace two storey post war house land like the back of a partly hidden dinosaur in the middle of south London. Our brief was to economically transform the existing house with careful and limited interventions, refocusing the house around a new courtyard garden whilst creating a bold new urban landmark on its prominent corner site.

Design

Modelling and sketching the roof geometry from an early part of the project allowed the seemingly complex series of stepped roof profiles to be broken down into an approachable and easily built structure with the bold sawtooth profile simplified into a series of repeated timber frame elements.

Build

The new elements of the building are predominantly timber framed – but incorporate some lightweight steelwork elements to enable the long uninterrupted span of the building over the courtyard facing glazing to maximise the flood of light into the building. The new elements looked to touch the existing building lightly, maximising the retention of the existing
